Ephemeral Art: A collaboration between nature and humans

Seemly dead and dying objects are filled with life and expression. As humans, we recognize the beauty in the dead and dying objects around us and are called to work with them in ways that draw attention to them. We linger, we look, we ask the question: is this natural or man made? We quickly discover the subtle touch of a human hand. An attempt to show others what it is we see. Below are some examples of ephemeral art, and even some, where simply natural processes have created a sculptural display of beauty.

The Dead and Dying

How do we as humans consider dead and dying things. A nuisance to be cleaned up and sanitized? Something to be thrown away to keep our surroundings clean and pure and rid of any signs of death. Is our aversion to dead and dying things, a commentary on our fear of death? Here on the Oregon Coast we are surrounded by dead and dying things. They are part of the beauty of this place we call home.

Life Death Life. Examples of the circle of life, death, life are all around us. The nurse log that nurtures new life including mosses, ferns, lichen, trees, shrubs, insects, and fungi. The green shoots emerging from the stalks of what looks like a dead and dying plant. Death and its nutrients create the raw material for new life.
